PLA Lifting Thread
PLA Lifting Thread Advantages
PLA vs PDO
PDO (Polydioxanone) | PLA (Poly lactic Acid)
Efficacy | • Never been proven for the capability of neo-collagenesis in clinical trials (PDO is approved for use in suturing) • Not desirable for Cog thread use due to its low elasticity and fast degradation in body | • Proven for neo-collagenesis ability through global clinical trials & currently being used as a main component of fillers following approval by the US FDA in 1999. • Has much higher elasticity and tensile strength compared to PDO and desirable for Cog and Screw type threads |
PDO | PLA | ★ PLA Advantages (Compared to PDO)
Glass Transition Temp. (℃) | -10 ~ -5 | 60 ~ 65 | - Higher thermal stability without changing structure in body temperature |
Tensile Strength (Gpa) | 1.5 | 2.7 | - Higher tensile strength - Higher elasticity |
Lifting Duration (Months) | 1.5 | 12~24 | - Longer lifting duration in body |
PDO (Polydioxanone) | PLA (Poly lactic Acid)
Efficacy Duration | • Partially degrading at 2 weeks following procedure and being fully degraded by 6 months | • Partially degrading at 3months following procedure along with collagenesis. PLA is fully transformed into collagen within 12 ~ 24 months. |
Safety | • Safety of repetitive PDO use has not been proven • The dye used in PDO thread, Violet No.2, which is also used industrially, may potentially cause pigmentation on the skin. | • PLA is naturally found in the body and has been approved by the US FDA for use as a filler component • No accumulation of pigments • Not harmful to the body |
Violet No.2
D&C Violet 2 is a synthetic dye produced from petroleum or coal tar sources
German suture company, B.Braun website:
Dyed sutures are rarely used on the outer surface of the body, to avoid a tattoo effect.
PLA Types
1. PLA Mono type
• Long lasting Efficacy
- PLA Mono type maintains its form within the body for a much longer period of time and, therefore, shows longer lifting efficacy compared to PDO
• Strong NeoCollagenesis (same as PLA based dermal filler effect)
- Proven by the US FDA as a main component of PLA based dermal fillers in the global market
- PDO only approved for suture and never proven for neo-collagenesis ability in clinical trials
2. PLA Cog type
• Strong Cog Effect
- PLA Cog type has stronger tensile strength and skin lifting ability compared to PDO (2-fold)
• Long Cog Effect
- PLA Cogs remain intact within the body for at least 12 months, maximizing the lifting efficacy (PDO Cogs partially degraded within 2weeks after procedure)
3. PLA Screw type
• Strong Volumizing Effect
- Current PDO screw type threads have lower tensile strength and elasticity and, therefore, have limitations in providing volumizing efficacy
- PLA screw type threads, however, have high tensile strength and elasticity, leading to strong volumizing effects and also efficacy in neocollagensis (indications: undereye hollow, nasolabial folds)
• Strong Elasticity
- Due to high elasticity, PLA can maintain screw structure rigidly
